Director’s Statement
The Church of Infinite Returns is a deeply personal and philosophical journey that I have envisioned for a long time. As a filmmaker, my goal has always been to push the boundaries of storytelling, exploring themes that challenge our understanding of reality, time, and existence. This VR experience is the culmination of that vision.
Inspired by Nietzsche’s concept of eternal recurrence, I wanted to create a space where visitors could experience the cyclical nature of time in a way that is both immersive and contemplative. The church in this VR space is the same sacred place where the protagonist of my previous film, Departure, found themselves trapped. This setting serves as the perfect foundation for exploring the interplay of light and shadow, despair and hope within a confined space.
Here, the 24-hour cycle of light and shadow is condensed into mere minutes, allowing us to witness the perpetual dance of dawn and dusk. This cycle invites visitors to reflect on the infinite nature of existence and to relive the profound emotions that echo within these hallowed walls.
The Church of Infinite Returns is not just a VR project; it is an exploration of the timeless beauty and cyclical nature of life itself. My hope is that visitors will leave with a sense of wonder, a deeper appreciation for the infinite loop of existence, and a renewed understanding of their place within the universe.
Creating this VR experience was both a technical and artistic challenge. It required meticulous attention to detail in animation, lighting, and sound design to truly capture the essence of eternal recurrence. I am grateful to my team for their dedication and creativity in bringing this vision to life.
As a first-time filmmaker, The Church of Infinite Returns represents the fusion of my passions for storytelling, animation, and philosophical inquiry. I am excited to share this journey with audiences and invite them to explore the emotional depths and timeless beauty of this sacred space.
